Has Fosamax given you Health Problems?

Fosamax is a drug used for the strengthening of bones and has been the root of a number of personal injury complaints since the year 2000 for a number of reasons. Many people fear that Fosamax has been the cause of severe health problems in the form of femur breaks and fractures.

If you have questions, worries or concerns about the Fosamax prescription that you are following, keep reading.

What kind of health problems can Fosamax generate?
It is believed that Fosamax can generate a number of different health problems, but one of the most common of those health problems associated with this particular drug are femur fractures and breaks.

Fosamax, ironically, is a bone-strengthening drug, prescribed to patients to treat diseases such as osteoporosis. The manufacturer of Fosamax, Merck, has been under the spotlight for a number of years now while the FDA researches into a large number of complaints which report that the drug is actually causing a weakness of some kind in the femur bone particularly.

The weaknesses generated are, as a result, causing femur fractures and breaks in situations that should not end in bone damage.

What studies and reports are available linking Fosamax to certain health problems?
Many studies and reports have taken place over a number of years concerning the use of Fosamax and its relation to femur breaks and fractures.

One of the major concerns is that according to data gathered from IMS health, more than 37million Fosamax prescriptions were handed out during 2008. That means that, even today, there might be a huge number of people who are at risk from femur breaks without realizing it until things are too late and they suffer from a painful bone fracture of some kind.

Indeed, the health problems associated with Fosamax are not recent affairs. Concerns about the safety of Fosamax started in as early as the year 2000. So many people were reporting health problems related to Fosamax, that the FDA on the 31st of January 2005 forced Merck to update the warnings on their manufacturing labels to alert users of Fosamax to the possible side effects from taking this drug.

Through 2007 and 2008, further reports were filed and cases were run concerning the health problems created by Fosamax related to irregular heartbeats and severe joint and muscle pain, revealing that femur breaks and fractures are not the only causes for concern when it comes to taking Fosamax on prescription.

It was in 2008 that a specific report was issued by the FDA linking the long-term use of Fosamax to unusual fractures of the femur – the long bone of the thigh. Figures are worrying because 10 out of the 15 women studied in this particular report (who had been taking Fosamax on an average of 7.3 years) noted atypical fractures of the femur from doing nothing more than “low energy activities.” These victims were injured when doing something as simple as walking up the stairs.

Results from this particular study can be seen in the March 2008 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

What can you do if you think you are suffering from health problems as a result of taking Fosamax?
If you are concerned about what health problems you might be suffering from because you have been taking Fosamax on prescription for a number of years, the best thing to do is to consult a medical professional and get expert advice on your particular situation without further delay.
