Pradaxa Injury - What to Do

Have you just discovered that a drug you have been taking has led to some sort of injury? Sometimes it is difficult to believe that a drug that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could lead to an injury.

However, sometimes drugs fail to work as they were expected to work or problems develop in certain patients that were not foreseen. This is what happened with blood thinning drug Pradaxa.

Basically, Pradaxa, which is given to patients who need help thinning their blood to prevent clotting, was developed by manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim to replace another blood-thinning drug called warfarin. It was marketed as being easier to use than warfarin, requiring less monitoring.

The issue arose, however, because unlike warfarin, Pradaxa cannot be quickly counteracted by doses of Vitamin K when any abnormal bleeding occurs. There is no easily fixable solution if any problems should suddenly arise. This problem is not unique to Pradaxa. Other blood-thinning drugs, such as Xarelto, Eliquis and Lixiana, also have similar problems.

Since Pradaxa was released in October 2010, it had generated more consumer complaints to the FDA than almost all other drugs on the market. Boehringer Ingelheim has already announced that it is investigating deaths associated with taking Pradaxa, which is said to have such a great effect on clotting that it leads to hemorrhages.

All of this information is probably a bit overwhelming. What does this mean for you and your Pradaxa injury? So what we have done is outline just how the process works when it turns out something has gone wrong with a drug such as Pradaxa and what your Pradaxa injury lawyer is going to have to prove in a court.

Millions of people are prescribed drugs every year or purchase them over the counter. The FDA requires that all of these drugs are proven to be safe and if they do carry certain risks of side effects that clear warning labels are placed on the products and doctors are informed of these side effects. Doctors who prescribe these drugs must then inform their patients of those risks.

However, sometimes these drugs, such as Pradaxa, do not work as they should. Sometimes not all drugs are done through the same rigorously testing as other drugs. Sometimes side effects do not become apparent until drugs are used over a long period of time. Sometimes, medications such as Pradaxa cause injuries in patients even though they are taking the drug as directed.

Here are just some of the complaints that the FDA has received about Pradaxa and the injuries that people taking the drug received:

  • Frequent nose bleeds
  • Unusual bleeding from the gums
  • Unusually heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Coughing up blood
  • Vomiting blood
  • Severe or uncontrolled bleeding after being cut
  • Red or black stool
  • Pink or brown urine
  • Unexplained bruising that grows over time

So what are you going to do if you discover that a drug like Pradaxa has caused you an injury because it was defective? That is where a Pradaxa injury lawyer comes in. The US civil justice system allows people to file medical malpractice lawsuits against doctors or defective drug lawsuits against drug companies. If you are thinking of taking such an action then you should talk to a Pradaxa injury lawyer first.

The Pradaxa injury lawyers at law firm Ketchmark and McCreight, P.C. are able to help you claim against the manufacturer of the drug if you have experienced an injury after using Pradaxa or any other of the blood-thinning drugs. We are experienced at medical malpractice and so the first thing we suggest is to talk to us about the injury you have suffered so we can examine whether we believe you have a claim.

In order to file a Pradaxa injury lawsuit, there are a few things that must be demonstrated to the court. These are things that your Pradaxa injury lawyer will go through with you before making the decision to claim. It must be proven that one of these three events occurred:

  • The drug was improperly manufactured.
  • The drug caused a dangerous or serious side effect.
  • The plaintiff was not warned properly by their doctor, pharmacist or the manufacturer of the drug about the side effects and risks of the product.

With Pradaxa injuries, a Pradaxa injury lawyer will be able to go through with you which one of these events occurred in your case. If, for example, your Pradaxa injury lawyer decides that it was the second reason, that the drug caused a side effect, then your Pradaxa injury lawyer would work with you in order to prove three things. That you have an injury, that the drug was defective, and that the drug was taken as prescribed and still caused an injury.

If we do believe your Pradaxa injury lawsuit will hold up in court, then we will walk you through your claim, doing all the legal work required. It is very important that you are completely honest when revealing any information to the Pradaxa injury lawyers at Ketchmark and McCreight, P.C. We must prove that you have been injured by using Pradaxa. Even the most minor details must be revealed so we do not meet any surprises in the courtroom.

Of course there are always varying factors to take into consideration. For example, if you did not use the drug as prescribed but still received an injury then you may still be eligible for compensation but it may not be the same level of compensation. Whatever the case, talk to a Pradaxa injury lawyer at Ketchmark and McCreight, P.C. and we will advise you of what options lay ahead for you.

Whatever the case, if you have experienced any of the serious side effects after taking Pradaxa, then you should seek advice from a Pradaxa injury lawyer.
